A picture of Wyatt Massey, an investigative journalist and writer based in Wisconsin.

Wyatt Massey is an award-winning investigative journalist who specializes in cracking into powerful, and often secretive, organizations to reveal their inner workings, expose abuses of power or betrayals of public trust, and document the impacts on local communities. He’s interested in how the lives of ordinary folks are upended by forces, people, or moments beyond their control.

Wyatt is a Livingston Award finalist for revealing a university cancer center’s toxic culture and mistaken chemotherapy doses by its top doctor. His reporting was part of an Emmy Award-winning documentary into nursing home finances and he’s received a top prize from the Religion News Association. In Tennessee, his reporting on alleged sexual abuse by an internationally known televangelist resulted in a state investigation. He also revealed that a Bible oozing with oil — once heralded as a modern miracle — may not have been all it was cracked up to be.

In Pennsylvania, Wyatt documented why Penn State University’s abdominal transplant program failed and the devastating effects of that failure on patients. Wyatt’s reporting was the basis for a legal precedent expanding public access to university records and undergirded a legal settlement between Spotlight PA and the Penn State University Board of Trustees that mandated increased transparency from the governing board, as well as legal training.

Wyatt grew up on a farm in rural Wisconsin and went to college at Marquette University, where he received a degree in writing-intensive English. He is the recipient of the Joseph A. O’Hare, S.J., Postgraduate Media Fellowship at America Magazine. He lives in rural Wisconsin.
